Space Requirements 📏

A functional weightlifting home gym doesn't require a massive space. Minimum requirements:

  • Squat rack + barbell: 2.5m x 2.5m minimum (8ft x 8ft)
  • Ceiling height: 2.4m minimum for overhead work (snatch, jerk)
  • Deadlift platform: 2m x 2m
  • Total recommended space: 4m x 4m (13ft x 13ft) for a complete setup

A single-car garage is the ideal home gym space for most lifters.

Flooring 🛡️

Flooring is the most important infrastructure investment in a home gym. Options:

  • Rubber horse stall mats (4cm thick): Best value. Durable, shock-absorbing, easy to source.
  • Dedicated weightlifting platform: Wood base with rubber top. Protects floor and equipment during drops.
  • Interlocking rubber tiles: Flexible layout, good for mixed-use spaces.

Never lift on concrete without rubber flooring — it damages equipment and is dangerous for dropped weights.

Essential Equipment 🔧

1. Power Rack / Squat Rack

The centrepiece of any home gym. A power rack allows safe squatting, bench pressing, and overhead pressing with safety bars. Budget: £300–£800 / $400–$1,000.

2. Olympic Barbell

A quality 20kg Olympic barbell is a lifetime investment. Look for: 28–29mm diameter, 215,000+ PSI tensile strength, good knurling. Budget: £150–£400 / $200–$500.

3. Weight Plates

Start with: 2x 20kg, 2x 10kg, 2x 5kg, 2x 2.5kg, 2x 1.25kg. Add as you progress. Budget: £200–£500 / $250–$600.

4. Adjustable Bench

For bench press, incline work, and seated exercises. Budget: £100–£300 / $150–$400.
